Security and ensuring the residents safety at Ashwood Private Nursing Home is of utmost importance. We offer keypad coded exits and have a number of external security cameras and lights that are activated with movement providing a safe and secure home.

We have a small, bright hairdressing room within Ashwood House. On one or two days a week we have a hairdresser call to the home and our residents can have their hair washed, permed or just blow-dried as they wish. This is something everyone looks forward to, fees can be provided on request.

The activities are provided by a qualified activity therapist who is employed by the home for twenty hours a week. She is advised of the needs and preferred activities of each resident. The weekly activities include armchair exercises, cookery, arts and needle-work, reminiscence therapy, reality orientation. We also do small group work such as card games and gardening for those who enjoy it.

We also have weekly bingo games and ten pin bowling competitions. During the year we have seasonal parties and organise entertainers such as the ‘The Wee Critters’ small animals which the residents really enjoy.

When weather permits, our therapist arranges outings to a garden centre for lunch or a trip to Carrickfergus. Our home is very close to Glengormley Library, the Bowling Pavilion and Tesco’s. The therapist can take residents who wish to go for ‘a dander’. A record is kept of all activities that take place, the names of persons leading each activity and the residents who participate.

An internal personal laundry service is provided for each resident within the home. Those items requiring dry cleaning can be arranged externally at the resident’s own expense.

We now have a High Speed Wi-Fi system throughout the building. Families can bring their iPads or laptops and surf the web, and get email while visiting. Our main motivation for installing the Wi-Fi service was to enable residents to video chat with relatives or friends in far off countries or just across the city whilst sitting in their rooms. We have observed that seeing friendly faces, via video chat, has brought a great deal of joy to our residents. Our staff can advise residents and their families on free video chat services such as FaceTime.
